The first Eclipse Galileo 2009 demo camp in SAP AG Walldorf

Eclipse is a highly successful open source application platform.  From its beginnings as a high quality tooling platform and premier Java IDE it has broadened to lead the way in rich client applications and is now taking the runtime and server world by storm.  Key to this success is the Equinox runtime that sits under Eclipse. Eclipse is also an open source ecosystem populated by hundreds of companies and thousands of developers producing and consuming components.  This drives home the "stackless stack" vision of enabling you to assemble the software infrastructure you need from commonly available parts.

SAP’s involvement in Eclipse has grown significantly over the last couple of years. I believe it first started with the excellent Eclipse Memory Analyzer (MAT) project. Now it looks like SAP is involved in:

It’s a good sign when a large company starts investing into the technology they are basing their current and future product lines on. From a personal point of view, I would be curious to see the culture shift inside of SAP when it comes to open source. I’m fascinated with how companies change internally to work with open source communities. At my time with another large company, there was a certain set of people who understood open source and those who didn’t. I remember one time there were people that suggested working on a project internally and than just dumping the code over the “open source fence” every release would be good enough.

From May 18 to June 29, we (Eclipse) are inviting individuals to organize and attend Eclipse DemoCamps around the world to celebrate the Galileo release. The Eclipse DemoCamps are an opportunity to showcase all of the cool interesting technology being built by the Eclipse community. They are also an opportunity for you to meet Eclipse enthusiasts in your city. You don't need to be a software developer to attend! The format of a DemoCamp is pretty informal. The idea is for a group of Eclipse enthusiasts to meet up and demo what they are doing with Eclipse. The demos can be of research projects, Eclipse open source projects, applications based on Eclipse, commercial products using Eclipse or whatever you think might be of interest to the attendees. The only stipulation is that it must be Eclipse related.

Last week Karsten Schmidt, Bernd Kolb & Erwin Tenhumberg, SAP AG (twitter) organised the first Eclipse Galileo 2009 demo camp in SAP AG Walldorf. With a crowd of almost 200 attendees, many cool demos and the right weather for beer and pretzels on the patio this was not only one of the biggest DemoCamps ever. It also was a lot of fun! Catch up with it here!
