G-20 Summit Cannes 3-4 November 2011
Presidents Barroso and Van Rompuy shared their views in advance of the summit in a letter sent to the other members of the European Council on 7 October 2011 (see MEMO/11/678). The European Council on 23 October is set to finalise EU preparations of the G-20 summit.

After a working meeting in Brussels, European Commission President, José Manuel Barroso, and Commissioner for economic and monetary affairs, Olli Rehn, issued the following statement.
The proposals made today (Tuesday 16 August) by President Sarkozy and Chancellor Merkel are a welcome step forward in our common efforts to strengthen the governance of the euro area. They represent an important political contribution by the leaders of the two largest euro area economies to this debate and the on-going work.
Statement by President Barroso on the euro area sovereign bond markets
Developments in the sovereign bond markets of Italy and Spain are a cause of deep concern. These developments are clearly unwarranted on the basis of economic and budgetary fundamentals in these two Member States and the steps that they are taking to reinforce those fundamentals. In fact, the tensions in bond markets reflect a growing concern among investors about the systemic capacity of the euro area to respond to the evolving crisis.

Van Rompuy and Barroso contradict eachother on plan for EU voting rights suspension
29 October 2010: European Council President Herman van Rompuy and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso answer questions, from Euractiv.com and Euronews, among others, at the end of the two-day summit of EU leaders in Brussels.
EU to publish bank Stress Test data in drive to calm markets
EU leaders have agreed to publish "stress tests" of banks next month to show investors where any potential risks lie. EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said the results would be published "on a bank by bank basis - this should reassure investors". The announcement came after EU summit talks dominated by the debt burden weighing on many member states. The EU is wrestling with Europe's worst public debt for decades. Leaders are intent on preventing contagion from the Greek budget crisis. The summit came amid particular concern about public finances in Spain, the fifth biggest eurozone economy.
